Improve Your SEO through Comments

Today I am so happy to have one of the nicest people I have ever met on twitter as a guest. Not only is he nice, supportive and full of knowledge, he also runs a fantastic t-shirt company Soge Shirts. If you are a blogger, I know you will think Tim is a genius after you read his post today.

Enjoy, and many thanks to Tim for sharing his expertise!

improve seo

We comment on blogs everyday and don’t realize that we sometimes miss big SEO opportunities to link to various portions of our site in the url section. In fact I was making the mistake of always linking to my home page in the blog comments. It’s fine to link to your home page if the blog has comment luv and will link to your last blog post. What about the sites that don’t have comment luv? If you have inner pages on your website like a contact me page, an about page, a services page etc you should link to it after you make your blog comment. This is because Google will then start logging your interior pages more and the more pages that Google counts for your site the better you will do in the SERPS which leads to more traffic for your site.

Also for the blogs that you comment on that don’t have comment luv than you should link to some of your blog posts. Many of you comment on the same blog every day or every other day. When you do make sure to link to a different page or blog post each time. If their blog is a do follow blog you will have more pages and posts categorized in Google. So for example if you comment on a friends blog every day why not link to one different blog post that you wrote each time you comment. That way you can have a link to every one of your blog posts eventually.

Don’t worry too much about whether the blog you are commenting on are  no follow or do follow,  even if their blog is a no follow site there will still be benefits. Google loves to see both no follow and do follow links to your blog or website because having some no follow links makes your links look natural. Building all do follow links while blog commenting looks very unnatural.

So make sure when you comment to remember to get the SEO benefits. All it takes is a few clicks to your own website to find a new page or post to copy and paste and then leave in the url box. In a few months your own site could be showing up in Google and other search engines a bit more than before.

  5. Great tips, though I have a question. Is it considered spammy to add a URL link when there is no comment LUV? Also, wow, I need to learn more about follow/no follow. Big time.

  6. Thanks Jessica for having me. It’s an honor to post here.

@Lanie Glad to help. I never really thought to much about blog commenting until I found an article on it a few months ago.

@Jenn No problem thanks for reading.

@Angela Thanks. Glad it helps. Believe it or not I am not very technical. I try to write without too much jargon because jargon is not something I understand usually.

@Elena Thanks. As far as leaving a link when there is no comment luv it depends. If they still have a spot for your url but no comment luv than absolutely leave your link. If they don’t then no I wouldn’t leave the link. When I blog comment I always read down at the bottom in case they have a blog commenting policy.

  7. So simple! Duh. Why didn’t I think of that? I have a million reasons for that. Thanks Tim!

I’m probably screwed with SEO knowledge!

@Lynn Funny that you say that. I am writing a post soon about No follow vs Do follow. I will let you know when it’s up.

@Alison To be honest I knew that blog commenting had benefits but I forgot you could link to inner pages till I did more research. Mixing it up does help.

    @Leighann Thanks so much!

  13. Thanks to Tim for the as-always helpful suggestions.

A question, might the blog-host feel taken advantage of if they don’t know why this is a good idea?

Hi Dr. G I don’t think they will mind. As long as you are entering your url in the spot where it says website it should be fine.

  17. Do you mean link to a different post where it asks you to type in your website? Or do you mean link to your blog posts in the comment body? Because when I read this, my first understanding was that you were suggesting adding a link as part of the body of your comment. And – while I guess this is ok when you’re linking to a related post – if you’re just doing it to get exposure, then it seems that that’s kind of “spammy”, for lack of a better word. Maybe I’m misunderstanding.

  18. Thakns Tim, great tips. Though I must confess that I totally sick at the “business” side of blogging, and wouldn’t know good SEO if it jumped up and bit me on the… well, yeah..
