Interactive Television Circa 1986
When it comes to watching TV, I’ve always loved sharing the experience with other people. From watching 90210 with my college roomies, discussing the twist & turns of LOST with my husband or live-tweeting an episode of The Bachelor or Real Housewives.
This all stems from behavior I displayed at an early age…
When I was 9 years old, Peter Brady was all the rage in my tween world. Every single day, I turned my parents TV from VHF to UHF, Channel 50 (remember UHF days!) and watched my favorite show, The Brady Bunch. I loved every Marcia! Marcia! Marcia! minute of it.
For some reason, unbeknownst to my mom, I would insist on getting dressed up for my daily Brady Bunch sesh.
Not only did I have to watch the show in my Sunday best, at the end of every episode, as they ran the obligatory Brady-family-member-in-a-
When my mom questioned this oddity, a daily occurrence when it came to me, I told her that I was dancing for Peter.
This tween’s logic: If I can see him, he can surely see me.
I was giving him my best moves, in my best So You Think You Can Dance sort of way.
All in the hopes that he would love me, just as much as I loved him.
Apparently, I’ve always loved sharing my TV viewing experience, it just wasn’t always a 2-way interaction.

LOL. Love it. I often make commentary to my TV as if the characters could see me. In fact just yesterday I was talking to Brody from Homeland questioning his terrorist inclinations.
