I made my announcement as I tripped over blocks and unwrapped a doll dress from my foot, “Mommy’s going to take a shower now. You guys stay in here and play Smush Your Sister.”
As I headed to the bathroom I couldn’t help but think to myself that we are totally strange.
And while showering to the sound of giggles as the kids used their big sister for a jungle gym (great sensory activity for her, btw) I started thinking of the other odd activities my children use for entertainment each day.
Let’s see, there is Push Each Other Down the Hall On an Upside Down Picnic Table, Color the Walls As Fast As You Can and the ever-popular, Cross-Dressers’ Tea Party.
I can only imagine what an unannounced guest might think of the daily lunacy around here.
But then there is this one game, truly my favorite. I may see if I can patent this one.
I will call it Wagons and Wine,
or maybe Mommy’s Done For the Day.
What is totally normal in your house that may not be quite so normal anywhere else?

I think you might be my twin! I too have played wine and wagon! Really enjoying reading your blog – beautiful writing!
That pic is awesome! Oh my gosh.
Priceless. Iโd said you have got to remain creative with all those munchkins! And now I do.
One more year and I can drink that wine and play that game ๐
Great family pics… If you think you’re family is strange….. Don’t sweat it!!!!!
Thanks Jaime :).
We play ‘Silent Bears’ in the car. The quietest kid gets a prize when we arrive at our destination.
I must try Wagons and Wines.
Need to try that game! I love that picture ๐
I feel like everything we do is completely absurd. Like rug burn rides…where they want to be dragged around by their feet and I panic that they are getting terrible rug burns.
Rug burn rides sound completely normal to me :).
I’d said you have got to remain creative with all those munchkins! LOVE the photo. The glass of wine is the perfect touch. ๐
That looks such fun. You are a terrific Mum.
Um, that is sofa king awesome. Please print that and post it somewhere that will serve as a daily reminder to you for the deep breath moments. LOVE it!
That pic is awesome! Are you ready for this? We play pull the worms from our heads or snakes or snails or whatever may be in there. I came up with this ridiculous idea when we would go to the hospital to visit my father-in-law. We had to travel quite a distance so we would spend a lot of time in the waiting rooms and they would get antsy. So this was the one thing that would keep them entertained for more than 5 minutes. They love it when I just miss pulling the worm from their ear and grab it by the head as it comes out of their nose. (all pretend, of course)
I think that is my favorite mother child picture ever.
We’re all weird. I just like that you embrace it.
It is an over-the-fireplace picture in my house for sure.
Oh my gosh. This is too much.
We’ve always been the “odd couple” at my house, and I’m sure that it’s just going to get worse as the baby gets older. The amount of time we talk about poop in our house (even before baby) is stunning.
looks like fun for the whole family! my 2 year old son likes to sit in the car for as long as i’ll let him, do not see the play-appeal, but i do like to make him happy ๐
Awesome. I am wondering who took the picture?
Right now we are locked in this ridiculously repetitive game involving Perry the Platypus from Phinneas and Ferb. My 3yo can not get enough of it. Probably because she’s the only one who knows what’s going on.
Wagons and wine? That’s it! We’re comin’ over!
I will add a few more carts to the wagon. Red or white?
How about a 4 lb. Chihuahua ruling the house?
Oh my gosh, that would be interesting.
I need to try playing this game stat! What a great invention. You should totally patent it. ๐
Everyone seems to want to play so I will be looking into a patent ASAP.
I love, love, LOVE that picture and it looks completely similar to something you would find in my house. There is usually a day during the week where you will find me outside swinging on the swingset with a glass of wine in hand!
My boys favorite games would be “wrestle each other until someone screams bloody murder” “Let’s see who can make mommy scream first” and “stomping on bees” fun times in our house! LOL!
We like to play Smush as well. I’m pretty sure we’re the only people who would buy each other’s parenting books.
That photo is pretty epic….I love it! I’m envious of showers taken while kids are awake and otherwise unsupervised, to the accompaniment of nothing more stressful than giggles. I’m also totally feeling ya on the you-had-to-be-there-ness of things that go on in the household.
As long as they all have helmets on. Safety First!!!!
Love this! We make up new lyrics to hip hop/pop songs. Yesterday, it was Cranky Baby to the tune of Beyonce’s Single Ladies. Now, I need to get one of those wagons…
I think that I need to start that game in my neighborhood. It would totally be well received! We do the whole wagon and wine thing for trick or treat and it is so much fun. Why limit that tradition to once a year?
Love it!
That picture is CLASSIC! I love it!
Oh my gosh…that is priceless!! So glad you captured that moment ๐
That is the best picture ever.
That last picture just made me giggle and love you. I think your house sounds completely normal!
Oh, I LOVE that last game! Definitely trying that soon.
I know we do a lot of strange things, but I can’t think of anything besides a glass of wine. Ha!
That’s hilarious. I think we should incorporate a “Wagons & Wine” game at our house. My son likes to play run down the hall as fast as you can and slide across the tile. It results in loads of bumps and bruises, but it’s pretty dang funny. And it keeps him entertained.
I’m trying to think and I’m not coming up with anything too “un”normal. MUST change that – ha ha ha! I think we might start playing wagons and wine! That photo is so full of awesome!! ๐
This quite possibly made my day. We are hella normal. Anyone that says they can get through the day without a glass of wine is just plain lying. Or on Valium.
I love finding other blogging moms who don’t take themselves so seriously…
Oh I would never survive if I took myself seriously around here.
Ha! Ha! Ha! I LOVE this and will definitely have to add that “game” to our evening activity list! ๐
Oh how I can relate to that craziness! Our current favorite is Butts Up where my husband and I throw beach balls as hard as we can at our kids. They think it is hilarious and we get a nice stress relief! Win win!
I love the name you have for it.
Wagons and wine? LOVE! You are my kinda gal. We do lots of silly games, mostly involving making up words to songs and I may or may not change words in books to say poo on every page just so I can hear my kids laugh. : )
All I have to do is say the word poo to get my boys laughing. Glad it\’s not just me.
That is awesome! I need to run out and buy a wagon to start this game at my house!
It is great and totally worth starting them young :).
OMG, You had my laughing so hard with that last picture and the names of the games. That’s just priceless!
HAHAHAHAHHA!!!! I love this ๐ And what an adorable photograph. This one sounds like the most fun, personally ๐
I love that you have a glass of wine in your hand. Sounds normal to me.
m.
THAT is by far my favourite picture EVER!!
AND you are so tiny you fit in the wagon!
Unfortunately I could not get the seatbelt on :).
Great end of the day game, much more relaxing than bathtime.
Oh, I really want to play wine & wagons!
“naked wrestling” and Jacob is SANTA Claus most days..encouraging us to sit on his lap, tell him what we want for Christmas and telling Gio to take our picture with him. TOTALLY NORMAL!!!! LOL.
Loved this!!!! That Wagons and Wine…enviable. xo
So funny and completely normal in my book :).
That photo is baaaad! =)
That. Is the best game ever. Can I come and play?
Definitely, I will order more carts for the choo-choo wagon.
Love that picture!
My youngest loves to play with the dryer sheets. He gets into the cabinet and pulls them out of the box. One by one. And covers the kitchen floor with them. At least it smells fresh when he’s done!
That Wagons and Wine game looks like a winner! I want to play!
I didn’t think I could love you anymore. And now I do. LOVE it!
Can I come over and play Wagons and Wine?!??!!
Absolutely, Tracy would like a seat as well so minus the kids the three of us can ride around with our wine.
Priceless. I love it!
OMG How is it possible that I could love you more??? xoxo
We\’ll stop by an pick you up in the wagon, there is even cup holders!
Lol! That is awesome. And yea, we have so many interesting games around here- including bedtime routine games that have resulted in blood.
Hee! Love this girlfriend!
Ha ha. Love it!!!
You are totally not wearing a helmet. Shame on you.
That is awesome! Right now Donut likes to play Pull Mommy’s Hair and Scratch Her Face. Good times.
wow, you shower alone? in peace? I’m so envious…inevitably I have at least one child staring at me the whole time…
and fingerpainting naked on the patio? oh yes we do if mama is done and needs an hour of quiet…
I love the games! …the picture is wonderful! My oldest grandsons favorite game is “spend all the $$$ nana earned on plants vs. zombies and not tell her!”.
Sometimes “if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em” is the only way to go. Love the wagon pic.
There’s a lot of unnormal in our house, but I can really entertain my kids when I chug as much Fresca from the can as I can and let out a huge “man burp.”
They LOVE it.
Hilarious! The best way to entertain them is to do things at their level. So funny!
That is an awesome picture. Love it.
Ha! I love it.
NI-ice! We have a child that prefers playing in the garage and/or sitting in the drivers seat of a car to running around the yard.
My two year old is the same, he will take apart the entire interior of our van instead of playing with the 10 million toys outside.
