We told your brother that pretty soon you would be able to run just as fast, pretty soon you would kick the ball into the net and pretty soon you would match him in noise.
We explained to your sister that pretty soon you would protest a pink headband and tutu, pretty soon you would finish the alphabet alone and pretty soon you would not be told what to do without challenge.
We assured your big sister that pretty soon you would giggle more than you fussed and there would be no quiet hour for naps and you could go in her room without bulldozer effect.
And we kissed your sweet head and said pretty soon our baby would be a boy and pretty soon we would trade diapers for a bike with training wheels and pretty soon you would be so much of your own that we would barely recognize when you were nothing but ours.
You are four today and you spell your name and tell jokes that aren’t funny and squeeze-hug and let me hold you almost enough. And even though you promise me you are the baby around here, pretty soon that just might not be.
Happy 4th birthday to my little rainbow baby, words will never be enough to describe what you’ve brought to our lives.

Oh very happy (belated) 4th birthday!
It’s so very true that shift from being simply ours to being their own person. It just slowly happens that you don’t at first realize that they are entirely their own person. Though yelling “I do it myself!” definitely helps.

Oh my word…you tell jokes that aren’t funny…that just captured the essence of little boys.

Happy Birthday little big man.

“Tell jokes that aren’t funny.” Mine will be four in February, and I can’t wait for those corny days.
