Our triplets were born three months early. I quickly realized there were no books to explain their special arrival, so I wrote one.
Soon is a children’s book that takes the reader on the hopeful journey of being born a preemie, the ups and downs of NICU life and finally, coming home.
There was no book to describe our journey. One of our daughters passed away during her first week of life and our surviving son and daughter spent nearly three months fighting for their lives.
When they finally came home we knew words couldn’t describe their journey. The books full of new parents bringing home full term babies just days after they were born didn’t come close to telling the story of the long road home our babies traveled.
Our little miracles are now seven and I’ve thought again and again about what I would like them to know about their birth and days in the NICU. I want them to know how happy we were when they arrived, how grateful we were they survived and how our hearts burst wide open when we finally, finally got to bring them home.
So I told them. I put the story of having a preemie and being a preemie into a children’s book that parents of preemies could read to their children. In words a little one can understand, “Soon” tells the story of a baby born too soon and a baby who will come home…
